MOUNT EVERETT

There have been many schemes to develop Mount Everett, which is the tallest mountain in the southwestern part of Massachusetts, and part of the Taconic mountain range.
In the late 1990s, the state sought to install telecommunications equipment on the mountain. In response, Green Berkshires board members commissioned several ecological studies about the rare dwarf pitch pine community on the summit. Those studies are available at our affiliated website: www.MountEverett.org.
Under the guidance of the Secretary of Environmental Affairs at that time, Bob Durand, the state eventually dropped its plans for telecom installations. Instead, the state developed a management plan to protect the summit. That plan is available at the state’s website. Click here to download.
Now, the state has released a report about renewable energy potential on public lands that calculates Mount Everett could be developed with ten industrial wind turbines. That report is available at the state’s website. Click here to download.
Green Berkshires will actively oppose any development on Mount Everett or on the public lands of the southern Taconic ridgelines.
